Is Your Roof Ready for a Solar PV System?

Thinking about switching to solar energy? Before your solar PV system can be installed, your roof needs to meet a few key criteria. While most homes in the UK are suitable, there are several factors that can affect performance, safety, and return on investment. Here’s how to tell if your roof is ready for solar panels.

Is Your Roof Ready for a Solar PV System?

What makes a roof suitable for solar PV?

A well-prepared roof ensures your solar PV system runs efficiently and safely for years to come. Even if your home seems like a good fit, a professional assessment is essential before installation. Below are the main things your installer will consider.

Roof orientation and pitch

South-facing roofs are generally ideal for solar PV, as they receive the most sunlight throughout the day. East- and west-facing roofs can still work effectively but may produce slightly less energy. Roofs with a pitch between 30 to 40 degrees are considered optimal, though systems can be adapted for other angles if needed.

Shading and obstructions

Nearby trees, chimneys, or neighbouring buildings can cast shadows and reduce the effectiveness of your panels. Even partial shading can impact energy generation if not addressed properly. During the site survey, installers will use tools to assess shading at different times of the day and year.

Roof structure and condition

Solar panels add weight to your roof, so it must be structurally sound. If your roof is more than 20–25 years old or shows signs of sagging, damaged tiles, or previous leaks, it may need repair or reinforcement before fitting panels. Your installer will check rafters, battens, and tile condition during the inspection.

Roof size and available space

The more panels you can fit, the greater your potential energy savings. An average home typically needs 10–16 panels, depending on usage and system size. Flat or small roofs may still be viable with tailored mounting systems or by combining with battery storage to maximise energy use.

Roofing material

Solar panels can be installed on most roofing materials, including concrete tiles, slates, and metal. However, materials like thatch or asbestos will require specialist advice. Some surfaces may also increase installation time or require extra equipment.

Access and safety

Your installer will also check whether there is safe access to the roof and whether scaffolding or lifting equipment will be needed. Safety is a top priority during installation, and access considerations can affect both cost and timeline.
